Using lashing straps correctly – safely and reliably

Load securing ensures that goods remain firmly in place during transit without slipping, tipping over or falling off. It provides protection for drivers, passengers and other road users, and prevents damage or accidents. A driver is obliged to refuse a journey if the load is not adequately secured!

Why load securing is important for everyone

Whether you’re buying furniture, using your car for everyday journeys, moving house or transporting goods with a trailer or lorry: correctly used lashing straps and associated equipment are indispensable in both private and professional situations. 

Important rules, methods and aids for load securing

G-force acts during every movement or braking manoeuvre – bear this in mind whenever you are loading the vehicle  

Seven basic rules for load securing:

  1. Use a suitable vehicle
  2. Do not exceed the permissible gross vehicle weight and axle loads; do not fall below the minimum steering axle loads
  3. Position the centre of gravity of the load on the longitudinal centreline and as low as possible
  4. Secure the load to prevent it from slipping, rolling or falling
  5. Use suitable load securing equipment such as lashing straps, nets, lifting straps, ropes or expanders
  6. Do not damage the load
  7. Adjust your speed to suit the load and the road and traffic conditions 

How to use and control lashing straps

  • The load must be secured in all directions, even at low speeds
  • The lashing strap selected must be in good condition and suitable for the load
  • Lashing straps must not be knotted, twisted, pinched or tightened over sharp edges – edge protectors are advisable
  • The total width of the strap should be in contact with the load
  • Check the straps for defects every time before use and carry out a professional ‘end-of-service life inspection’ at least once a year
  • Always store lashing straps in a dry, well-ventilated place, with protection from chemicals, heat and the elements 

Examples of lashing techniques

With horizontal lashing, the required fusing of the load to be transported is achieved purely by increasing the friction force. 

The load is ‘pressed’ onto the load area using lashing equipment.

With oblique/diagonal lashing, the load is secured directly to the lashing points on the loading area using lashing straps. Four lashing straps should always be used. Each strap must be capable of supporting the weight of the total load.

Diagonal lashing is always preferable to low lashing. The lashing points must be capable of withstanding the required holding force.

How do I ensure the safety of my load in the car?

Load securing in a car involves preventing the load from slipping, tipping, rolling or falling out. Heavy items should always be loaded on the ground and as close to the backrest as possible to keep the centre of gravity low. Use lashing straps or nets to secure the load. Ensure that the load is stowed so that it fits snugly, with no gaps. Using a non-slip mat increases the coefficient of sliding friction. The higher the coefficient of sliding friction, the less load securing is required.  

Which lashing straps are suitable for private use

Light to medium-duty lashing straps are particularly suitable for private use. It is important that the straps are certified in accordance with EN 12195-2 and are used in perfect condition.

How many lashing straps do I need for my transport?

The number depends on the weight, shape, size and fragility of the load, as well as the lashing method chosen. For diagonal lashing, 4 lashing straps should always be used. Anti-slip mats can reduce the number required.

How do I use lashing straps correctly?

Lashing straps should be fitted so that they can operate to their full width and tensile strength. Check the strap for damage before each use. Tighten the strap across the load or secure it diagonally between the load and the lashing point. The strap must not be knotted, twisted, pinched or stretched over sharp edges. Do not over-tighten the ratchet; instead, tighten it using moderate force.

What mistakes should I absolutely avoid when performing load securing?

Typical mistakes include:

  • Use damaged or worn straps
  • Loose straps or too few straps
  • Kinks, knots or twists in the straps
  • Fastening the load to unsuitable lashing points
  • Overloading or uneven loading
  • Failure to carry out regular controls during transport

Straps must be checked for visible defects such as cuts, tears, fraying, damaged seams or deformed ratchets before each insert. A professional inspection must be carried out at least once a year (DIN EN 12195-2 recommends a test to determine whether the straps are due for replacement). Straps that have been deemed unfit for use must not be reused.

Their durability depends on usage and care. A test to determine whether they are past their best should be carried out once a year. With normal usage and good care (stored in a dry, dark place, protected from chemicals, UV light and heat), they will last for several years.
